According to the British FCDO's travel advice, no part of Guatemala City is free of crime, including Zone 10 (the Zona Viva), popular with tourists and foreign residents. In Zone 1 (the Historic Center) tourists have been targeted by opportunistic criminals; zones 18 to 25 are known for higher levels of crime (the FCDO recommends chain hotels and researching the area), and zones 6, 7 and 8 should be treated with caution. The FCDO describes Guatemala as having one of the highest violent-crime rates in Latin America, although most serious crime involves local gangs. The current U.S. Travel Advisory (its level and the zones it excludes) could not be consulted (travel.state.gov returned a 403).
