The Arévalo government created, by Governmental Agreement 100-2025 (published on 4 Jun 2025, checked at the AGN), the Presidential Commission for the Handling of Conflict (COPRECON), temporary for 4 years, chaired by the President and made up of the ministers of the Interior, Finance, Agriculture (MAGA), Environment (MARN) and Energy and Mines (MEM), for the peaceful settlement of conflict across various spheres; the agreement does not mention land specifically. According to its director Otto Zeissig (Prensa Latina, 13 Oct 2025), COPRECON inherited an inventory of files that “easily exceed 600”, runs eight regional offices in the departments with the highest incidence — Petén, Huehuetenango, Quiché, Alta and Baja Verapaz, Izabal and Quetzaltenango — and its Directorate of Agrarian and Environmental Conflicts may account for 75–80% of the cases handled.
